Youtube: The lifestyle?

YouTube. The most popular video hosting website in the world. 14 billion different videos are watched every week. 24 hours worth of video is uploaded every minute.

But, YouTube isn't just a site for sharing and watching videos anymore. It's a lifestyle. People dedicate their lives to uploading videos every single day of their lives. And some of them make a lot of money. Just like a blogger who has decided to monetize, YouTubers can decide to put ads by the side of their videos, or have ads play before their videos. Depending on how many views the video gets, Google will send them checks of sometimes thousands of dollars.

This video gives some more details, however, it's really long.

I just think it's crazy that in six years a website has evolved from a guy posting a video about his trip to the zoo, to people not having to leave their house and earning enough money to support a family. (I'm not saying that vloggers are lazy in any way, I wouldn't want to spend hours in front of a computer trying to make my video view worthy, editing, compressing, and uploading)

In ten years will it be normal for people to walk into Wal-Mart holding a camera at arms length talking into it? I mean, I got weird looks when I went down a waterslide with my (waterproof) camera. But in ten years, that could be a normal job.

I'm picturing about five-ten years in the future, all these kindergarteners sitting in a circle going around saying what they want to be when they grow up.

Teacher: "Emily what do you want to be when you grow up?"

Emily: "A Princess :)"

Teacher: "Johnny, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

Johnny: "A vlogger."

I understand why people want to become famous on YouTube, all you need is a camera and something to say, but it still seems weird to me that so many people are famous because they walk around talking to a camera. I think it's fine to take video of things your family does and post them on YouTube to preserve them in case something happened to your computer, but to do it everyday? Some people are too caught up in preserving memories that they don't have enough time to make them. What do you think?

I think it's silly for people to "dedicate" their lives to uploading YouTube Vids. :)

Wonderful post, dearie!

People spend too much time on the computer...and that sums up my thought. The computer is a modern day idol - but only if people let it become so.

(There's a middle of the road for every issue...)
